Best Locations for Couples Photos in Washington DC (2026 Guide)

If you and your partner have been talking about finally doing a couples session, Washington DC is one of the best cities in the country to do it because it has no shortage of backdrops. Monuments, green spaces, waterfront, cobblestone streets — it is all here. The hard part is picking one.

I am a couples photographer based in the DMV and I have shot across DC, Maryland, and Virginia. These are the locations I actually recommend — and why.

A Note on the National Mall & Reflecting Pool in 2026

If you have been to the National Mall recently, you already know it looks nothing like it normally does. The Mall is currently mid-construction for America's 250th anniversary celebrations — festival infrastructure, fencing, and crews are active between 4th and 14th Street through the summer. The Reflecting Pool in front of the Lincoln Memorial is fully drained and being repainted.

For couples sessions this summer I am steering everyone away from the National Mall and Reflecting Pool area entirely. It is not the backdrop you are picturing and the construction activity makes for a stressful session on top of it.

The good news: everything on this list is completely unaffected. The Tidal Basin, The REACH, Old Town Alexandria, Rock Creek Regional Park, and Brookside Gardens are all construction-free and ready for your session right now.

1. The Tidal Basin

This is the one everyone thinks of first (and for good reason). The Tidal Basin sits between the Jefferson Memorial and the Washington Monument, and at the right time of day the water reflects everything. Sunrise here is hard to beat.

The Tidal Basin works well as your backdrop year round — fall foliage, winter mist, spring cherry blossoms and summer sunrises. If you want a photo that is unmistakably Washington DC, this is it. No permit is needed for small handheld sessions here — you just show up.

Best time: Sunrise or the hour before sunset. Midday light is harsh and the crowds are at their heaviest.

Best for: Couples who want something iconic. Anniversary sessions, engagement photos, or anyone who wants a gallery that feels like DC.

2. The REACH at the Kennedy Center

Underrated and one of my favorite spots for couples sessions in DC. The REACH is the Kennedy Center's modern expansion — all sweeping white architecture, open outdoor pavilions, and views of the Potomac that hit differently at sunset. The bold geometry of the building creates a completely unexpected backdrop that photographs in a way nothing else in DC does.

No permit is needed here. Outdoor sessions on the grounds are open from 7am to midnight — just check the events calendar before your session date so you are not shooting in the middle of a busy crowd.

Best time: Sunset. The light hits the building and the river in a way that is hard to replicate anywhere else in DC.

Best for: Couples who want something bold and architectural. If a monument backdrop is not really your thing but you still want something distinctly DC, this is worth looking at. I shot an elopement here and it was stunning.

3. National Gallery of Art — Indoor Natural Light

Most people do not think of a museum when they are planning a couples session. But the National Gallery of Art is one of the most underrated photography locations in all of DC — and on a hot summer day or a rainy afternoon, it might be the single best option in the city.

The East Building in particular has this incredible atrium — natural light pouring in from the skylights above, clean marble walls, and a scale that makes everything feel cinematic without trying. The light in there is soft, even, and completely flattering in a way that outdoor midday light almost never is. I have shot portrait sessions here and walked away with some of my favorite images.

No permit needed and no fee to enter since it is a public museum. The main things to keep in mind: no tripods, no external lighting, and be respectful of other visitors. Sessions work best on weekday mornings right when it opens. Crowds start to pour in 30 mins after the museum opens on weekends!

Best time: Weekday mornings. Winter is also great when it is too cold to shoot outdoors.

Best for: Couples who want something artistic and cinematic. Also a genuinely great option when DC weather does not cooperate — you never have to reschedule for rain.

4. Old Town Alexandria, Virginia

Technically Virginia, but close enough~ Old Town has everything — cobblestone streets, waterfront, historic row houses, and amazing restaurants/coffee shops you can pop in after your shoot. It photographs warm and intimate in a way that the monuments do not.

For anniversary sessions, engagement photos, or couples who want something that feels personal rather than grand, Old Town is a great idea! It also tends to be less crowded than the National Mall which means fewer strangers walking through your frame.

Best time: Sunrise and sunsets! Come in the spring and summertime when everything is in bloom, in the fall for the foliage, or in the Winter for the Christmas lights!

Best for: Couples in Northern Virginia or anyone who wants something intimate and walkable. Also a great second location to pair with a DC session.

5. Rock Creek Regional Park (Lake Needwood), Montgomery County

If you want green, this is it. Rock Creek Regional Park spans across Montgomery County, Maryland and gives you dense forest, creek beds, and natural light filtered through tree canopy. It is completely removed from the monument aesthetic — which makes it a strong choice for couples who want something that does not scream tourist destination.

The park works across all seasons. Spring and summer give you lush green. Fall gives you color. Winter gives you bare branches and moody light that works really well for a more cinematic style.

Best time: Mid morning or late afternoon when the light comes through the trees at an angle.

Best for: Montgomery County couples in Rockville, Gaithersburg, and surrounding areas who want something natural and relaxed. Also great for anyone who is a little camera shy — the environment tends to make people feel more at ease than shooting downtown.

6. Brookside Gardens, Wheaton, Maryland

Just outside DC in Montgomery County, Brookside Gardens is one of the most beautiful spots in the DMV for couples photography. Manicured gardens, open fields, wooded paths, a Japanese-style garden — all within the same property!

It photographs particularly well in spring and fall. One thing to note — Brookside Gardens does require a photography permit for professional sessions, so we handle that in advance before your session date. If you want something lush and romantic without being in the middle of the National Mall, it is worth the extra step.

Best time: Morning on weekdays when the gardens are quiet. There will be crowds on weekends!

Best for: Montgomery County couples or anyone based in Maryland who wants to stay local. Garden-style, soft, and romantic.

7. Rockville, Maryland

Not every great couples session needs a famous backdrop. Some of my favorite galleries have come from wandering a neighborhood — good light, a relaxed pace, and two people comfortable enough with each other that the camera becomes an afterthought. That is exactly what a fall session in Rockville felt like.

For couples based in Montgomery County who want something local, personal, and a little different from the standard DC monument session — this is a great option. Rockville and the surrounding area have more to offer than most people realize.

Best time: Fall for the foliage. Early morning or golden hour year round.

Best for: Montgomery County couples who want something close to home and low key.

How to Choose the Right Location for Your Session

The best location is the one that matches your style — not just the one that photographs well. A couple who wants something intimate and warm will feel out of place at a grand monument. A couple who wants drama and scale will feel underwhelmed by a garden.

When I work with couples I always ask what kind of photos they actually want to walk away with before suggesting a location.

If you are not sure where to start, reach out — I am happy to suggest locations based on your style, the time of year, and what you are going for. Couples sessions start at $420 and are available across Washington DC, Northern Virginia, and Maryland.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the best place for couples photos in Washington DC?

It depends on your style. The Tidal Basin is the most iconic and works beautifully at golden hour. Alexandria is better for couples who want a slightly more urban vibe. The REACH at the Kennedy Center is the most visually bold. If you tell me what vibe you are going for, I can point you in the right direction.

When is the best time of year for couples photos in DC?

Fall is the most popular season — the foliage, the cooler temperatures, and the light are all working in your favor. Spring is also beautiful, especially near the Tidal Basin. Summer works well for early morning and golden hour sessions. Winter is underrated — bare trees and overcast skies create a moody, cinematic look that not enough couples take advantage of.

Do I need a permit for couples photos in DC?

For most NPS locations like the Tidal Basin, no permit is needed as long as your group is fewer than 8 people and your photographer uses handheld gear only. That is how I shoot — no tripods, no lights, no stands. Some locations like Brookside Gardens do require a permit — I will walk you through the process so you do not have to worry about it.

How far in advance should I book a couples session in DC?

For fall sessions, reach out by August — those slots fill up fast. If you have a specific date or location in mind, earlier is always better.

What should we wear for couples photos in DC?

Coordinate without matching. Think complementary colors rather than identical outfits — navy and cream, earthy tones, or one bold color against a neutral. Avoid busy patterns or large logos. Most importantly, wear something you actually feel good in. Confidence shows up in photos more than any outfit choice. We will also talk outfits after you have committed to a booking with me!

Do you shoot engagement sessions in DC?

Yes — reach out and we can put together a session that works for your timeline and vision. Engagement sessions are available across DC, Maryland, and Virginia.
